Trabzonspor have officially declined the resignation tendered by head coach Fatih Tekke following the club’s exit from the UEFA Europa League. The 48-year-old manager offered to step down on Thursday evening after a 5-0 aggregate defeat against Ferencvárosi TC.
Speaking live on air immediately after the match, Tekke announced his decision before informing club officials:
“I am stepping down from a position I have been deeply honored to hold. Today’s loss is unacceptable. Misfortunes can be accepted, but I cannot accept this. Someone has to take responsibility for this loss, and I am taking it. As of today, I am stepping down.”
The club issued a statement on Friday confirming that the board of directors did not accept Tekke’s decision, attributing his offer to resign to the emotional impact of the defeat:
“The Trabzonspor Board of Directors has not accepted the resignation of our head coach, Fatih Tekke. The offer to resign stemmed from the intense emotional turmoil caused by the defeat. Fatih Tekke continues in his role as head coach and will lead our team in our upcoming fixtures.”
Following the board’s decision, Tekke reaffirmed his commitment to the club, stating that Trabzonspor will address their shortcomings and focus on their objectives in the Süper Lig.
